The Reader's Bookshelf

NOT One of our Readers!

Better late . . .

I meant to write about it last month, but things heated up at work. Then "The Fellowship of the Ring" extended edition came out. Then madam editor said she just had to pre-empt the column with her new discovery . . . anyway . . . David Weber's new Honor Harrington novel is finally out. It comes with a CD ROM that contains all the previous material from Honor's universe and the new novel.

Its about time . . .

Reprints of Andre Norton's "Time Traders" books are available from Baen. (A new one is out from TOR titled Atlantis Endgame, but I haven't managed to get my hands on it yet.) Jack Vance's "Dying Earth" books are again in print (The Last Castle won a Hugo, if I recall correctly)! And a miracle happened and I (temporarily) have enough shelves to house all of my books.

Honor Harrington is back again, along with some of her old adversaries, kicking butt and taking names! Fans of this series will remember that Honor managed to save the Queen from assassination, only to see the Prime Minister and other old allies die. Without Cromarty, the government doesn't hold in the Star Kingdom of Manticore and Honor's internal adversaries take over. As the story picks up, the baddies have been in charge for several years. Coruption is rampant, and the Havenites are starting to re-organize because they can't seem to conclude a peace treaty (which would end the war-time taxes that are helping fund the corruption.

With so many enemies (both within and without the Star Kingdom), how can Honor possible prevail again?? You know the formula. And you know how well it works. That's why we all keep coming back over and over!

If you're the type of fan who likes to see things blown to kingdom come after a shot or two, you probably won't appreciate David Weber's Honor Harrington books. The physics, the military strategy, the political intrigue, and the human interaction will probably be overwhelming.

These are re-prints of Andre Norton's classic series about time travel and space travel. Go back in time and encounter early man, then ride a flying saucer half-way across the galaxy to explore the ruins of a dead space-faring civilization!

These novels are as exciting as any of the Heinlein juveniles, but more loosely written . . . less hard science and more adventure. If you are too young to remember them, try them now. If you do remember them and are worried that they won't stand up to you old memories, rest easy! They're just as good now a they were back then.
