Welcome to the October Edition of The Collector Times!
Since Halloween is at the end of the month, Brett Schmidt was kind enough to provide us with a nice cover theme drawing.
One of the best ways to develop the next generation's interest in comics is to give
some comics out along with the candy to trick or treaters on Halloween. I don't know
about you, but I sure want that next generation of comic readers out there, so I can
continue to enjoy my habit. Ask your local comic shop for a donation or to sell to
you at a discount. Chances, are, they have some stuff lying around that they will be
willing to share.
Our winner of Joe Singleton's Big Fat Contest is Jay from Minnesota. Jay asked Joe to
redo Robin, and Joe obliged. You can see the results in Artistic License.
Thanks again to all of you that entered! We were very impressed with the sheer numbers
and the quality of all of the requests. Joe might be reworking some of your character
requests in the next year, you'll just have to check back and see. We will probably be
making this contest an annual event, too.
Hurricane Rita blew our electricity out here in Houston for about 3 days. We are running
a little behind. If you don't see everything up tonight, keep checking back. It might
take us a couple of days to get everything online. Can't fight the forces of nature,
and no, we didn't evacuate. We're on the 500 year flood plain, 50 miles inland, and life-long
residents of the Gulf Coast. We know how to prepare and how to ride out hurricanes.
Thankfully, it was pretty mild where we live.
We have a lot of great things in this issue for you. Jamie Coville provides us with a
con report and photos of
The Toronto Comic Book Expo 2005. We will also have some photos of DragonCon,
courtesy of Jeff Valentine. We also have a Neil Gaiman
theme going on this month, too. Sidra Roman provides us a review
of the comic adaptation of Neverwhere and Chris Karnes writes about his attendance at a
Gaiman book signing. We also have several movie reviews
this month. Plus, lots lots more.
Take some time, and look around. As usual, we are very glad that you are here!
Joe Singleton shared some distressing news with me last night. Apparently, popular comics creator William Messner-Loebs has fallen on some difficult times. The news has been out for awhile, but I didn't know, and so I am passing the information along. You can read the article in the Detroit News here:
http://www.detnews.com/2005/livingston/0501/20/B05L-65258.htm
Thankfully, the nice people at TwoMorrows Publishing has published a benefit book to assist Mr. Messner-Loebs in his time of need, featuring many pieces by popular comics artists and writers. Joe reports that the book is good, too. You can order it here.
One thing great about the comics industry and it's fans is that we can usually come together and help when one of our own is suffering. I encourage you to check it out.
