This month I want to discuss world building with you all. I'm kind of new to this whole thing as I have mentioned before, and I'm wondering what books can help with this process?
When I was on RPG.net back in December and January, I found someone selling a World Builder's Guidebook for AD&D. Shortly after that I read on another site that it was good for building a world in almost any AD&D or D&D 3.0/3.5 game, and I figured I would give it a shot. I waited a week after Christmas to get it and set it aside because I knew I was going to be doing a lot of reading in the College English Class I'm taking this semester. Now that we are in the final 4 weeks of class the load has lightened and I'm able to take a look at the World Builder's Guidebook a bit closer. Seems like a good thing to have although there are a few printing errors in some of the charts. For example in one of the charts it makes mention of a D161, but on the notes at the bottom of the chart there's a description of how to roll a D16. I guess that's one of the advantages to living in the modern computer age, better editing and revision technology.
The only other thing I've been able to find for building a D&D world is the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook. This was released back during the D&D 3.0 time and has been said by many on-line sources to be useable in the D&D 3.5 game. I looked at this at my local game store and it is okay. Some of the prices in the book seem rather inflated, but I guess much like the times between 1990 and 2007 the value of money goes up and down.
If you have any good book suggestions for world building, just e-mail me at the address below. Just remove the nospam and you'll reach me.
Thanks,
Mathew B.
