As a child in early 1940s, Wilson's ability to read was hindered by what was diagnosed later in life as severe dyslexia. His parents encouraged him to read by giving him science fiction pulps and collections of newspaper comic strips. By the time he was 15, he not only mastered reading but he attempted to write. Most of his work was derivative of his idols which included Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. While he had some success selling his work to pulps, he never quite reached their level of fame. In one day he got a story about alternative reality travel rejected. He had slaved on the story for more than three years. He quickly turned it from prose to a religious text and began the Church of Histhology. A few months later he received a cease and desist letter from the lawyers of L. Ron Hubbard. Wilson successfully countered the suit in court. Much of Wilson's fortune was funneled through the Church. He developed an addiction to peyote which he claimed helped with the integration process. In 1998, Wilson died of a brain tumor at the age of 55. |
Personality: |
From the founding the church onward, Wilson liked to think of himself a 20th century shaman though he was also very casual about the way people addressed him- as long as they were not members of the church. Friends, close confidants and business men often called him 'Reggie'.
